A Retrospective

Over the years, Richard Pettibones’s work has evolved from an art of unrelenting satire to an illusively transforming art of commemoration, subtlety, and beauty. By 1964 he had found his voice in diminutive "copies" of paintings by newly famous artists, like Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol. He also created sculpture based on the works of Brancusi, Mondrian, and found inspiration in the poetry of Ezra Pound. While Warhol continues to fascinate him, his most insistent theme has been with the trickster of twentieth century art, Marcel Duchamp. This exhibition presents the full range of the artist’s career, more than 200 paintings and sculptures.
