Heavyweight Champion gathers thirteen years of mixed media work by Los Angeles based artist Martin Kersels. His artwork, though frequently funny at first glance, often reveals the awkwardness and embarrassment of quite literally not fitting in. Works that initially inspire laughter slowly reveal darker underlayers, as with Buoy, an unsteady beacon that rocks back and forth across the room or Jerry, a short stepladder whose tenuously rigged connections verge on collapse. Early performances, documented in large scale photographs show Kersels experimenting with his own body in simple acts and the American debut of Dionysian Stage.
