Installation view, Elevator Music 19: Split, Tang Museum, 2011

Kabir Carter’s installation for the Tang’s Elevator Music series
features sounds based on those generated by the elevator itself. For
the work, Carter analyzed the Tang Museum elevator’s acoustic output
and added another sound to the elevator’s car. As the elevator
performs various tasks and movements, the elevator's sounds and
Carter's added sound mix and overlap. The results can be heard both
through the ear and through other parts of the body via physical
contact with the elevator's posts, walls, and other physical
components. By introducing additional sounds alongside the incidental
sounds of the elevator, Split creates resonant and continuously
modulating zones within the space, encouraging passengers to listen
and explore. Support provided by Genelec Inc.

Kabir Carter's work moves between performance and installation, and
has been exhibited and presented at Overgaden Institute of
Contemporary Art, Copenhagen; PiST Interdisciplinary Project Space,
Istanbul; Inter Arts Center, Malmö; the Studio Museum in Harlem, New
York; and museums and art spaces throughout Europe and the United
States. He has participated in festivals and biennials including CTM
(club transmediale), Full Pull, Performa, and Unsound New York. He has
received commissions and awards from the American Music Center, Danish
Arts Council, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and Media Alliance,
among others. Reviews of his work have appeared in Artforum, the New
York Times, Nutida Musik, and Parkett. He holds an MFA from the Milton
Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College.
