Family Saturdays
Fall 2011
October 22 - December 17, 2011
2:00-3:30 pm
(No program November 26)
The Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College
presents a series of eight Family Saturday programs
to accompany the work in our exhibitions this fall,
including Opener 22: Whiting Tennis;
I Myself Have Seen It: Photography and Kiki Smith; and others.
Held on Saturdays from October 22 through December 17
(except November 26), the programs include a brief tour followed by a
hands-on art activity, with all materials provided.
The programs run from 2:00 – 3:30 PM, and are free and open to the public.
Suitable for children ages 5 and up along with their adult companions,
the Family Saturday programs are fun and educational.
Reservations are highly encouraged as space is
limited and the programs are very popular.
You may sign up for each program up to one week in advance.
For additional information and reservations,
or to be added to our Family Saturday e-mail list,
please call the Tang’s Visitor Service Desk at 580-8080.
{If you have a reservation and have not arrived by 1:55 PM, your seats may be given to someone on the waiting list. Please let us know in advance if you have a reservation and find you cannot attend, so that we can give your places to other eager artists.}
Programs are subject to change without notice –
you may call a few days ahead to find out about changes.
Oct. 22 - Wood Grain Collages
We will look at Whiting Tennis’s collages that include a lot of papers printed with wood grain, and discuss how they make the pictures look and feel, then we will create our own collages using paper that looks like wood grain, too.
Oct. 29 - From Doodles to Sculpture
We will look at some of Whiting Tennis’s doodles and drawings and discover how he uses them as ideas for sculptures. Then we will make some line drawings and try to reproduce them in 3D using pipe-cleaners to express lines in space.
Nov. 5 - Little Buildings
We will look at Whiting Tennis’s small, medium, and large sculptures and then make 3D sculptures of our own inspired by his shapes and ideas: shelters, animals, and more. We will use corrugated cardboard, paper, wood, and many other materials.
Nov. 12 - Printed Papers
After learning how Whiting Tennis prints paper for his collages to look like wood grain, leaves, sky, and more, we will cut patterns in potatoes and print beautiful papers of our own. You can use them later for collages or wrapping paper!
November 19 - Ninth Annual Potato Turkey Festival!
We are celebrating our Ninth Annual Make-a-Turkey-Out-of-a-Potato Festival! We will make centerpieces out of potatoes, pipe-cleaners, feathers, and beads. Create a fantastic bird sculpture to decorate your table!
Nov. 26 - No Program this week
Dec. 3 - Make a Sock Puppet Character
We will look at Kiki Smith’s giant papier-mache puppet and try to describe its personality. Then participants will make their own sock puppets, giving them characters and voices. If we have time, we will create brief performances with our puppets.
Dec. 10 - Tarp Art
We will look at and analyze Whiting Tennis’s Blue Tarp and Mastodon, then make artworks that incorporate actual tarps.
Dec. 17 - Calder Mobiles
We will look at and talk about the mobile by Alexander Calder in the Tang’s atrium, then make our own mobiles with moving parts out of colored wire and other bright materials.
