Family Saturdays
Spring 2012
February 11 – April 21, 2012
2:00 - 3:30pm
(no program April 7)
The Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College
presents a series of ten Family Saturday programs to accompany the work in our exhibitions this spring, as well the return of some favorite projects.
Held on Saturdays from February 11 through April 21 (except April 7), the programs include a hands-on art activity, some following a brief tour of one of the exhibitions, with all materials provided.
The programs run from 2:00 – 3:30 PM, and are free and open to the public.
Suitable for children ages 5 and up along with their adult companions,
the Family Saturday programs are fun and educational.
Reservations are highly encouraged as space is
limited and the programs are very popular.
You may sign up for each program up to one week in advance.
For additional information and reservations,
or to be added to our Family Saturday e-mail list,
please call the Tang’s Visitor Service Desk at 580-8080.
{If you have a reservation and have not arrived by 1:55 PM, your seats may be given to someone on the waiting list. Please let us know in advance if you have a reservation and find you cannot attend, so that we can give your places to other eager artists.}
Programs are subject to change without notice –
youmay call a few days ahead to find out about changes.
February 11 - Make Artsy Valentines
We will have everything you need to make Valentines for friends, family members, and even that Special Someone! Paper, tissue paper, doilies, sequins, crayons, markers, and lots, lots more.
February 18 - Pedestals & Paintings
We will look at sculptor Pam Lins’s work on our mezzanine – a series of unusually shaped and painted pedestals holding small paintings – then make miniature versions inspired by them.
February 25 - Pop-Up Paper Sculpture
We will look at images of Jean Blackburn’s bureau that seems to have stretched all apart and popped open, then learn pop-up paper techniques to create colorful sculptures of our own.
March 3 - Abstract Tape Art
After looking at images of Amy Sillman’s colorful abstract paintings, we will make abstract art out of colored tape in a zillion widths and colors. Even if you’ve done this one before, it’s fun to do again and again!
March 10 - Eccentric Chandeliers
After looking at images of chandeliers by artists Jessica Stockholder, Jorge Pardo, and Virgil Marti, we we will make some crazy “chandeliers” of our own, out of plastic cups, colored wire, beads, and more.
March 17 - Green Wonders
We will provide all sorts of green art supplies to create abstract assemblages. An assemblage is kind of like a collage, but more 3-dimensional, using common materials in unusual ways.
March 24 - Irregular Arches
We will take another look at Pam Lins’s sculptures on the mezzanine, and make irregular arched sculptures based on hers, which were based in turn on the insides of famous sculptor Henry Moore’s.
March 31 - Scribbling as Art
We will look at Sol Lewitt’s large scribbled drawing on the wall in the Atrium, then work on some scribble drawings of our own!
April 7 - No Program this week
April 14 - Fabric Collages
We will look at Nancy Grossman’s assemblage in the atrium that has a lot of pockets in it, then make collages using fabrics to createdesigns.
April 21 - Spiders and Spider Webs!
Bringing back a favorite springtime art project for the first day of Spring, we will look at how some artists incorporate spider web images into their artwork, then we’ll make colorful spider webs and fantastic spiders to live in them.
