Family Saturdays

The Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College
presents a series of six Family Saturday programs
to accompany the work in our exhibitions this summer,
including Terry Adkins: Recital; Dance/Draw; Twisted Domestic; and Hearing Pictures.
Held on Saturdays from July 14 through August 18, the programs
include a brief tour followed by a hands-on art activity, with all materials provided.
The programs run from 2:00 – 3:30 PM, and are free and open to the public.
Suitable for children ages 5 and up along with their adult companions,
the Family Saturday programs are fun and educational.
Reservations are highly encouraged as space is
limited and the programs are very popular.
You may sign up for each program up to one week in advance.

July 14 - Distorted Dishes
We will look at our exhibition Twisted Domestic, then make distorted table settings by cutting up and rearranging paper plates, bowls, and cups.
July 21 - Dance/Draw – Drawing to Music
We will discuss the relationship of the movements of dance and the movements of the hand and arm in drawing while looking at our exhibition Dance/Draw. Then we will draw to music, noticing the dance of our hands and arms as we listen to different kinds of music.
July 28 - Make a Noise-Maker
While exploring the exhibition Hearing Pictures, we will talk about the sounds that the pictures make us think of, then we will make and decorate noise-makers of our own.
Aug. 4 - Wild Webs
After discussing both Dean Snyder’s shiny metal spider web in Twisted Domestic and Faith Wilding’s crocheted web room installation in Dance/Draw, we will make spider webs out of pipe-cleaners, colored wire, and beads.
Aug. 11 - Hang Out with Hanger Art
We will look at Terry Adkins’ sculpture Matinee that is based on some of Bessie Smith’s songs, and that incorporates many clothes hangers. Then each participant will make a sculpture out of tiny hangers and other materials, while listening to Bessie Smith sing in the background.
Aug. 18 - Feathery Fun
We will look at and discuss Terry Adkins’ sculpture Single Bound, which is made from wire mesh and feathers, then make sculptures using feathers and a variety of other materials.
