Whiting Tennis creates paintings, sculptures, and drawings populated by mysterious forms that are at once recognizable yet otherworldly. Using wood, cardboard, plaster, concrete, paint, asphalt, tar, and other woodshop-like materials, Tennis’s provisional constructions merge basic forms of shelter and furniture with allusions to cubist and cartoonish figures. These commingled forms and their ambiguous functions work together in mystifying, timeless objects that seem to be simultaneously relics of the past and helpful contraptions for the future.
