Nnenna Okore was a visiting artist on the Skidmore Campus in August, 2011. In her Installation 101 class, Okore worked with students to create Life Force a part of the exhibition Rush at the Schick Art Gallery.
In this video, Okore talks about overcoming the challenges of being a female African artist and how her passion to create leads her to inspire young female artists.
Okore transforms discarded materials, such as newspapers, magazines, cardboard, sticks, and fabric into intricate sculptures and installations that address the relationships between consumption, waste, and economic conditions.
"Where I come from…[materials] are not wasted as they are here. Although there is a big culture of recycling here, it isn’t driven by the same motives, or seen in the same light. There isn’t so much value attached to the materials, so they’re not reused, as they would be in relatively poor Nigerian communities.”
