Michael Janairo joined the Tang Teaching Museum in 2014 as the first Assistant Director for Engagement, and was promoted to lead communications and strategic initiatives in fall 2018.
He has overseen the development and implementation of hundreds of public programs, including the museum’s annual community day; the design and launch of a new Tang website at tang.skidmore.edu; the restructuring of the museum’s social media; the design and publication of a new viewbook that received national recognition from the American Alliance for Museums; and a strengthening of the museum’s media relations to earn placements in regional and national media in broadcast, online, and print, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Art in America, Art News and more.
Prior to joining the Tang, he was an arts journalist for several years and was a fellow at the National Endowment for the Arts at USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., and the Virginia Center for Creative Arts in Amherst, Va. In addition to his journalism, he has published poetry, fiction, and essays in various anthologies and small presses. As an educator, he has taught and lectured at the University of Pittsburgh, the University at Albany, the College of Saint Rose, among others. He blogs at michaeljanairo.com.
