It is easy to demonize sugar, shaking our heads over its terrible history and its destructive impacts. But sugar is not going away, and it is a global commodity of major importance. Where and how is sugar produced today? How does it travel? What are some of its economic effects? What are some best practices with regard to environmental and social impacts?
Jeff Bauml has had thirty years of experience as a sugar trader. His informal talk and open conversation will explore sugar as a global commodity. Bauml is a Skidmore parent and first-generation college graduate with extensive knowledge about sugar, the complexity of sugar’s impacts globally, how agricultural commodities are produced and traded, and the place of sugar in a broader economic context.
