Upbeat on the Roof with Joan Kelsey

Outside in the dark, a single figure wearing a bright, patterned sweater sits behind a circular concrete table. The figure's face is obscured by the camera flash. On the table sits a chess board and a drink can.
Joan Kelsey

Join us Thursday, July 17, at 6 pm, for a performance by indie singer-songwriter Joan Kelsey in the gallery (moved inside due to the weather forecast).

Joan Kelsey is a New York City-based artist known for their folksy melodies and rich storytelling. Their songwriting practice began as an effort to marry their interests in poetry and composition, resulting in a lyrically and sonically complex body of work. Kelsey’s songs discuss God, loss, failure, friendship, and refracted memories.

Joan Kelsey also performed at Upbeat on the Roof in 2019.

The 2025 Upbeat on the Roof concert series celebrates the Tang’s 25th anniversary year with some of our favorite acts from previous Upbeat seasons.

Concerts take place on the lawn outside the Tang (we outgrew the roof!) every Thursday evening from July 10 through August 21 at 6 pm, and are free and open to the public. Visitors are invited to bring blankets, camping chairs, and their own food and drink!

Crafts on the Grass

Tang Art Educators offer crafts for kids at every concert, starting at 5:30! A different craft will be available each week. All projects are suitable for children aged 5 and up, with adult supervision recommended. Materials will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
