Monday, April 11th in Filene Hall at 8:00 pm, Show Your Sport will introduce two distinguished speakers, Kate Fagan and Kristin Russo. Kate Fagan is a panelist and columnist for ESPN as well as a former DI Basketball player at UC Boulder. You may have seen her on ESPN’s “Around the Horn” or “His & Hers” on ESPN2. She is the author of “The Reappearing Act” and is currently working on a forthcoming book about the mental health of student-athletes that was inspired by the ESPN piece “Split Image”. Kristin Russo is the CEO and editor in chief of the website Everyone Is Gay, host of the PBS Digital Series “First Person,” and co-author of This is a Book for Parents of Gay Kids. Russo is also the CEO and co-founder of “The Parents Project”, a digital platform resource for parents. She has a Master’s in Gender Studies from CUNY Manhattan and tours colleges around the country talking about LGBTQ issues. Her work has been featured on Newsweek, CNN, Time, The Ellen Show, and more.
Show Your Sport is a student-athlete led initiative that rallies student-athletes to engage in student-led activism. Led by members of Skidmore’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Show Your Sport unites student-athletes around pressing social issues. The 2015-2016 campaign aims to bolster the visibility of and allyship for the LGBTQ athletic community. Last spring Show Your Sport first gained traction through student-led educational presentations, poster campaigns, and social media outlets through which Show your Sport educated over 136 student athletes from 16 varsity teams about LGBTQ issues. This year, we have been continuing these conversations within small group dialogues, alumni fundraising, and team events on National Coming Out Day during the Fall Semester.
Show Your Sport would like to recognize and thank the following departments for their support of our event: Office of Student Affairs, OSDP, Health and the Exercise Science Department, the English Department, the Gender Studies Department, MDOCS, Skidmore News, Speaker’s Bureau, SGA, SAAC, the Skidmore Pride Alliance, and the Department of Athletics. It would not have been possible without these generous donations from across campus.
