Family Saturday: Build a Better World

Nick Cave, Soundsuit, 2012, mixed media including embroidery, fabric, vintage toys, rug, and mannequin, 127 x 98 x 93 inches, rug: 98 x 92 inches, courtesy of Jack Shainman Gallery

We will look at Nick Cave’s Soundsuit in If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day: Collections of Claude Simard. Cave’s sculpture includes many small globes among other objects. Then each participant will create a 3-D sculptural collage using world maps as our building material. We will have some posterboard, tape, and glue for bases and connections, but the main art supplies will be a whole variety of old and new world maps, ready to cut and construct.

Family Saturdays foster multigenerational creative cooperation through looking at artwork, discussing it, and engaging in a hands-on art activity. Most programs run from 2:00 – 3:30 pm and include a tour of a specific exhibition.

All programs are free and open to the public, and suitable for children ages 5 and older, accompanied by their adult companions. Materials are provided. Reservations are required—for additional information and reservations, call the Tang’s Visitor Service Desk at 518-580-8080.
