A Conversation with Liz Collins and Jennifer Kabat

Installation view, Liz Collins — Energy Field with the fifth iteration of the Guest Artist Project by Laurel Sparks and SKOTE, Tang Teaching Museum, 2017

Join artist Liz Collins and writer Jennifer Kabat, lifelong friends, as they discuss identity formation, New Wave culture, and the exhibition Liz Collins — Energy Field. This conversation takes place Friday, September 8, at 7:30 pm, and is part of our two-day closing celebration of Energy Field.

Liz Collins is an artist and designer. She presented her performance piece, Knitting Nation, at the Tang as part of the 2012 exhibition Dance/Draw, which she has also shown at eleven other locations, including the Rhode Island School of Design, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, and the Museum of Modern Art: Studio. Her recent work explores the boundaries between painting, fiber arts, and installations, creating spaces that envelop the viewer in vibrating color fields.

Jennifer Kabat’s essays have appeared in Granta, Harper’s, Frieze, The Believer, Virginia Quarterly Review and The White Review. Awarded a Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant for her criticism, she teaches at NYU and the New School, and her writing has been included in exhibitions at Arnfolfini (Bristol UK), Index (Stockholm Sweden) and The Poor Farm (Little Wolf, WI), where her ongoing collaboration with the artist Kate Newby was featured. She is working on a book of linked essays, GROWING UP MODERN, exploring civic values from the modernist suburb where she grew up to where she lives now in the Catskill Mountains.

The two-day closing celebration of Liz Collins — Energy Field includes a knitting party, a screening of the cult classic Liquid Sky, this conversation with Liz Collins and writer Jennifer Kabat, a witch storytelling hour, and a New Wave dance party!

This event is free and open to the public.
