For many Documentary Studies faculty, Skidmore is just a small part of their “day job.” From filmmakers, to sound artists, to historians and writers, the department has a variety of talented creators working in their field when they’re not in the classroom. The showcase will include work by Sarah Friedland, Adam Sekuler, Cecilia Aldarondo, and Adam Tinkle.

Memories of a Penitent Heart
Directed by Cecilia Aldarondo

An excerpt from the award-winning documentary film that cracks open a Pandora’s box of unresolved family drama. Originating from filmmaker Cecilia Aldarondo’s suspicion that there was something ugly in her family’s past, the film charts her excavation of the buried family conflict around her uncle Miguel’s death, and her search for Miguel’s partner Robert a generation later.

My Life In Google
Directed by Adam Sekuler

My Life In Google uses the archives of Google Earth, Street View, and Maps to create a personal memoir landscape film/live performance. Mixed with songs, sounds sourced from the web, and a live reading of a personal memoir/essay, the work examines themes of memory, nostalgia, and technology in order to geo-locate a descriptive genealogy, historical non-fiction, and travel journal of a life. The Hard Problem
Sound by Adam Tinkle with Kim Stanley Robinson and Marina Abramović

The Hard Problem is a collaborative project with performance artist Marina Abramović and science fiction author Kim Stanley Robinson based on a series of interactions between a story that Robinson was writing about a multi-generational spaceship heading to another star, and the performance art gestures of Abramović’s that are a journey into our inner self. The audio tracks were mixed and choreographed by Adam Tinkle into the podcast: The Hard Problem: An Audio Voyage. (40 min)
