Elevator Music 3: Michelle Nagai

Michelle Nagai is an electroacoustic composer, performance artist, and improviser whose interdisciplinary approach utilizes a myriad of physical and aural elements in the creation of site-specific performances, radio broadcasts and installations. Ideas grounded in the theories and practices of acoustic ecology, cultural geography, and expressive therapy play a large role in shaping her creative activities. In addition to recent electronic music compositions for CD and radio, her catalog of works includes numerous compositions that feature live acoustic performance, natural environments, costume objects, found objects, dance, theater, sculpture, and video.

At the Tang Teaching Museum, in collaboration with 91.1 WSPN Skidmore College Radio, Nagai will continue her traveling sound project EC(h)OLOCATOR.

Its live broadcasts are designed for and with independent campus and community radio stations across Canada and the United States. By sharing creative control of the project with community members, radio station staff, and producers, composer Michelle Nagai nurtures new awareness and collaboration among them. She invites them all to join in soundwalks, field recording sessions, soundscape composing, and sound improvisation. The project will culminate with a live broadcast on WSPN and an installation in the Tang’s elevator.
