Skidmore Centennial Alumni Invitational

The Tang’s first Alumni Invitational features new work by four artists, all Skidmore College alumni — ceramic artist David Dalva ’85, photographer Susan Lipper ’75, and painters Sarah Lutz ’89 and Susan Rabinowitz Malloy ’45. Marking the college’s centennial year, the Alumni Invitational celebrates the talent and creativity of Skidmore’s alumni as well as the influential legacy of the college’s art program.

Both Sarah Lutz and Susan Rabinowitz Malloy look to the natural world for inspiration; Malloy distills forests, seascapes, and skies into fundamental shapes and patterns, while Lutz finds abstract forms in the microscopic, depicting colorful cell clusters called morulae.

Ceramicist David Dalva creates sculptures of tension and movement by building organic forms from clay coils. Photographer Susan Lipper pairs large-scale photographs to produce balanced formal compositions that explore the often narrow margin separating documentary and fiction.
