Kabir Carter’s installation for the Tang Teaching Museum’s Elevator Music series features sounds based on those generated by the elevator itself. For the work, Carter analyzed the Tang elevator’s acoustic output and added another sound to the elevator’s car. As the elevator performs various tasks and movements, the elevator's sounds and Carter's added sound mix and overlap. The results can be heard both through the ear and through other parts of the body via physical contact with the elevator's posts, walls, and other physical components. By introducing additional sounds alongside the incidental sounds of the elevator, Split creates resonant and continuously modulating zones within the space, encouraging passengers to listen and explore. Support provided by Genelec Inc.
Kabir Carter's work moves between performance and installation, and has been exhibited and presented at Overgaden Institute of Contemporary Art, Copenhagen; PiST Interdisciplinary Project Space, Istanbul; Inter Arts Center, Malmö; the Studio Museum in Harlem; and museums and art spaces throughout Europe and the United States.
